Frequently Asked Questions

At Bamboo Balance, we specialize in personalized Pilates, corrective exercise, and functional fitness for adults of all ages, all out of our studio in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles. Whether you’re new to Bamboo Balance or just curious about how our sessions work, this page covers the most common questions from our clients. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out — we’re always happy to help.

How Does the Process Work for New Clients?

Before scheduling your first session, we’ll have a brief complimentary phone or video consultation to discuss your needs and goals and ensure my services are the right fit. After booking, I’ll send detailed location information and an intake form for you to return before or bring to the first session. This helps me prepare for your initial assessment and plan how to progress from there. Many clients come for corrective exercise, but my expertise also includes Pilates apparatus and mat, functional fitness, and resistance training. My goal is to build a trusting relationship and help you move with less pain, greater strength, and more confidence in your daily life.

What Should I Expect for My First Session, and How Should I Dress?

In your first session, I assess your posture, musculoskeletal balance, and movement patterns, and we’ll discuss your injury history, discomfort, and goals. Wear comfortable, close-fitting clothing and be prepared to work barefoot. We’ll also talk about footwear choices for outside the studio!

Does Corrective Exercise Include Pilates and/or Strength and Functional Training?

Yes. Corrective exercise starts by addressing misalignments, movement compensations, and discomfort. I often use fascia release and stretching to restore muscle pliability and joint mobility. Once balance and symmetry are restored, we strengthen underused muscles and correct overcompensation. Pilates and other functional fitness and resistance methods are incorporated to achieve optimal core strength and whole-body function.

What Are the Benefits of Pilates, and How Does It Differ from Yoga and Traditional Weight Training?

Pilates offers benefits such as a stronger core, better posture, increased flexibility, joint-friendly strength, stress relief, and improved cardiovascular endurance.

While both Pilates and yoga are mindful, low-impact practices, Pilates focuses on integrated whole-body strength and precise muscle engagement. Unlike traditional weight training, which often isolates muscle groups (i.e. ‘chest day’ or ‘leg day’), Pilates works the entire body in a balanced way.

Do I Need Prior Pilates Experience to Join?

No prior experience is needed. All clients start with basic Pilates fundamentals on the mat before progressing to apparatus work. Visit the Pilates page to learn more about the practice in detail.

How Do I Book a Session?

Click the “Book a Consultation” button or visit our Contact page to email or call. I’ll follow up promptly to confirm your appointment and answer any questions!

How Long Is Each Session?

The initial session is approximately 75 minutes, in order to learn more about you and assess your exact needs. Regular sessions are 55 minutes.

Do I Need to Bring Anything for the Sessions?

No — just yourself! If you haven’t already returned your intake form ahead of time (which we send to you ahead of time), you can bring it to the first session.

Do You Offer Virtual Sessions?

Yes. Virtual sessions are conducted via FaceTime or Zoom using your available equipment. They follow the same approach as in-studio training.

Do You Offer Group Sessions or Special Events?

My studio space can accommodate up to a two-person duet session. Special sessions for a group class (three or more) can be arranged to be taught virtually. Refer to our Videos & Retreats page for other offerings and upcoming specialty retreats.

What Is the Cancellation Policy?

There’s no charge for sessions canceled 24 hours in advance. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged the full session fee. Rescheduling may be possible if there’s availability.
